Hyundai Card picks up three prizes at iF Design Award 2021
2021-05-06
Hyundai Card took home three awards at the International Forum (iF) Design Award 2021 for its “Hyundai Card App 3.0,” “Hyundai Card DIGITAL LOVER,” and corporate ID “MyD,” the company announced on April 22.

The iF Design Award began in 1953, organized by the iF International Forum Design GmbH in Germany.

It is rare for a financial firm like Hyundai Card to win three prizes at the design awards in a single year, especially in different categories varying from credit card design to app design and employee ID badges.

“Despite being a financial company, Hyundai Card is noted for the design not simply because it is good at it, but because design plays a crucial role in line with its business strategies,” said Richard Ahn, head of Design Lab at Hyundai Card. “We come up with simple yet high-quality products, taking design into consideration as well as technological and cultural elements, which we believe is the reason we are recognized globally for design comptency.”

Hyundai Card has won 11 times at the iF Design Award since 2014 for projects such as “Hyundai Card My Taxi,” “Hyundai Card DIVE” app and vertical card design.

The company also took top honors in other top international design competitions such as the IDEA Design Award and Red Dot Design Award for “Media Shelter,” a bus shelter installed at Seoul Train Station Bus Transfer Center, and “RE: ECM” exhibition.

MyD — short for My ID — is an identification card for Hyundai Card employees, which won in the “Product” discipline. Inspired by the shape of hopae, a personal ID plaque during the Joseon Dynasty, the initial version of MyD has been recognized for its functionality and aesthetic value since its debut in 2010 and was renewed in 2020.

Hyundai Card paid attention to the fact that an employee badge is a symbol of its corporate culture and the first thing that people see. It then started devising a completely new form of an employee badge to deliver Hyundai Card’s innovative image and vibe.

Hyundai Card App 3.0 won in the “Communication/Apps” category for acting “as a convenient digital companion to the users’ spending experience.”

Launched in August 2020, the app broke away from the conventional layout that showed all the menus horizontally and came up with two main homes, called “Dual Home.” Largely indebted to its innovative form and function, Hyundai Card App 3.0 maintains 50 to 130 percent more monthly active users than other credit card apps in Korea.

It also improved usability by leveraging elements that users might have already been familiar with, such as scroll interaction working like a social media feed, and “account layers,” similar to a receipt.

Hyundai Card DIGITAL LOVER, rolled out in February 2020, won in the “Communication/Branding” discipline.

The credit card comes in four different designs — Jean Crush, Rusty Robot, StarBomb and Foggy Plane — targeting digitally native millennials who the company interpreted as “lonely travelers across outer space.”

The front side of plate is made of materials with unique textures and contrasts sharply with the brightly colored reverse of the cards.

This is the second time Hyundai Card DIGITAL LOVER has been honored at an international design contest. Last year, the card received the IDEA Design Award 2020.

The company also provided its MyD cards to all Hyundai Capital employees across the globe to make sure they can embrace Hyundai Card’s distinctive corporate culture with a sense of belonging and unity.

In October 2010, Hyundai Card was asked by Shinsegae Group to create its new employee badge, helping in both the design and manufacturing process.
